There is a student I see every Tuesday night at the studio. Last night, after he got out of class, I asked him how it was.
"It was FANTASTIC.’ he exclaimed. ‘Every time I come to yoga, my mind is blown. I feel like it keeps changing how I see the world. But then I have to go ride a shitty train home packed with people and I feel like everything I learn just melts away, and then I want to punch someone on the train in the face. I hate it, I don’t know why I live in this city."
"You live here because you love people."
He stared back in disbelief, “Um…You just heard me right? The train sucks! It’s packed with people who are inconsiderate, and rude, and just shitty and I have to deal with that every day.”
I smiled. “You don’t HAVE to do anything. You choose to live here. If you didn’t love to be around people, if you didn’t crave human interaction and excitement, you wouldn’t live in New York City. Because that’s what this place is, it’s a city full of people. And you are one of them.”
A stare and a cracked smile. “Fucking yoga.”
